Getting Braces

Getting braces is a big decision and so it is important that you understand what is involved.

Orthodontic Consultation

If you are thinking about getting braces the first step is a consultation. You will meet the orthodontist and be asked about why you feel you need a brace. If you are concerned about appearance, discomfort or costs do mention it as these can be taken into account when planning your orthodontic treatment.

Planning

At the first visit you will be given an outline of possible treatments. The orthodontist will usually take photographs, x-rays and moulds of your teeth in order to make a detailed treatment plan.

Proper planning is very important and this includes answering any queries you may have about orthodontics and the treatment suggested. We are very happy to spend as much time as needed to make sure your orthodontic treatment plan is right for you.

You may need some general dental work before any orthodontic treatment to make sure you are dentally fit. For younger patients we often (but not always) advise waiting until the adult teeth are through. We are very happy to do assessments when patients still have a mixture of adult and baby teeth, as sometimes this can help with planning for future treatment.

Types of Braces

We can show you examples of different types of braces and previous patients’ results. You may find our Gallery useful as we feature patients before and after treatment.

The type of brace recommended will depend on your situation and your preferences. You may be recommended fixed braces, removable braces, Invisalign aligners or lingual braces. Please click the links to visit the appropriate pages to learn more about each type of brace.
